It's always nice to meet new people and create new friendships. This year we are fortunate enough to not only have a former crew member make the leap to cyclist (Rob Fontes), but brand new riders are joining the team like Steve Johns. He may be new to RAAM, but he's not new to cycling. He's been riding with some of our guys for years and is looking forward to his time on the road.
Steve will be joining Team Daywalker alongside Jeff, Rob and Keegan to tackle more of the day time riding. He has been involved in cycling for several years and currently can be seen around Carmel riding with the Indy Ultra Cycling group.
Steve has lived and worked in Carmel, Indiana for more than 25 years with his wife, Melinda and two kids, Emily and Zachary. Cycling is a big part of Steve's life and he is thankful for the improvement in health it offers, as well as the friendships it's created. Steve says, 'Some in my family would suggest it’s an obsession, but I prefer the word passion.'
RAAM has been on Steve's bucketlist for a while now and he's excited to be able to participate this year. He has complete several endurance races including Race Across Indiana (RAIN) 8 times, National 24 Hour Challenge 4 times and The Heart of the South 200 just to name a few. His training consists of multiple rides throughout the week with friends and even family. 'I enjoy most types of cycling whether it’s in a group for a social ride, racing or touring. I find ultra endurance racing the most rewarding,' said Steve.
Though not directly impacted, Steve has friends that are challenged by MS and one friend who passed away due to complications with MS. He wants to ride across the country to enjoy the company of those on the road, compete in a challenging endurance cycling event and most importantly spread awareness about MS to one day find a cure.
