This year our team will consists of 3 cyclists (Jeff, Kurt and now Rob) all battling MS and doing amazing things! Many teams compete in RAAM with a higher goal than just crossing the finish line. I believe we are one of the only teams competing in RAAM to raise awareness/funds for a disease with which some of our riders fight on a daily basis. Welcome back Rob Fontes to Gears 2 a Cure for MS. This time as a cyclist!
Rob is hopping on board Team Daywalker with captain Jeff Zaniker to carve out his share of the road for RAAM 2016. Last year he was the crew chief for "ZZZ" Team helping to coordinate the journey from the captain's chair of the lead vehicle.
Rob was diagnosed with MS back in 2002 and at that time was told by his neurologist, "you will never ride a bike again." Clearly he has laughed in the face of that diagnosis by preparing to compete in what is considered to be 'The Worlds Toughest Bike Race.' Rob currently lives in Holly Springs, NC and works as an independent contractor for Fontes Construction. He recently bought "another girlfriend" in the form of the above Orbea that he plans to use in the mountains on RAAM.
Rob has spent his time training for RAAM by competing in several other local cycling events. Most recently the Keep Raleigh Boring Crit in NC. He claims, "I discovered I love the smell of cooking brake pads as we dive in to a corner at 25+ mph." He also completed the Ace Race with a 25.7 mph average.
Take a moment and make a donation. For as Rob puts it, "to maybe avoid anybody ever being told, 'you will never ride a bike again,' ever again." He hopes to find a cure not only for himself, but prevent other people from hearing possible devastating news.
