Rob Fontes
Rob is making the leap from crew to cyclist! Last year he was a crew chief, but this year he's trading the steering wheel for handle bars. He met Kurt Lorch as a patient advocate for Shared Solutions. Kurt invited Rob to crew last year, but this year he's opted to ride saying, "I told (Kurt) it will be easier next year if you just let me ride!" Rob spends his days as a carpenter in Holly Spring, NC. He was diagnosed with MS in 2002 and says, "The irony in this whole thing is that when I was diagnosed with MS in 2002, my neurologist looked me straight in the eye, and said, 'you will never ride a bike again'. HA! Here I am, 30,000+ miles later taking part in "The Worlds Toughest Bike Race!" He wants to show the MS community that anything is possible with hard work and that by competing in RAAM he is, "giving my MS the middle finger" Rob would most like to sit down for lunch with cyclist Tyler Hamilton. Because he's been to the edge and back, plus he has a foundation with his dad that supports MS research. If Rob could have any super power he would be the one that could cure MS. |
